Godfried Van de Vyvere received his first musical training at home, with his father being an organ player, and then progressed from there to school and church choirs, recorder ensembles, horn quartets, folk music collectives, and the like. In 1977 he commenced his higher education musical studies at the LUCA School of Arts, (- campus Lemmens-) in Louvain. He received the laureate diploma in musical pedagogy, the laureate diplomas song (under Dina Grossberger) and choir conducting (under Paul Schollaert and Erik Van Nevel) as well as the Master degree in song (under Lieve Vanhaverbeke). He also studied under Lucienne Van Deyck.
As a soloist he sang the alto parts in works by Händel, Purcell, Vivaldi, Charpentier and Fiocco. In the Mozart year of 1991 he performed the part of Zephyrus in Mozart’s opera ‘Apollo and Hyacinthus’. He has been a member of ensembles such as Close-up and Capilla Flamenca, as well as strengthening the alto sections in ‘old music’ collectives such as the Huelgas Ensemble and Currende. With these he sang across Europe and in Israel, and recorded various cds. He was fortunate enough to be able to sing under the guidance of conductors such as Paul Van Nevel, Philippe Herreweghe, Jos Van Immerseel, Sigiswald Kuijken, Rene Jacobs, Erik Van Nevel and Patrick Peire.
He has been Acantus’ musical director since 1982, performed the same function for the Sint-Niklaas boys’ choir In Dulci Jubilo from 1983 to 1985, whose curriculum mentions recordings of Bach’s Passion of Matthew under Philippe Herreweghe and the score to the Hugo Claus film ‘The Lion of Flanders’.
Guest performances as conductor have included concerts with La Furia from Antwerp, leading a week’s study in Poland with Lublin’s chamber choir In corpore, a Bach showcase with In Corpore and the baroque orchestra Concerto Avenna from Warsaw, and the massive undertaking of producing an 11-choir concert happening called ‘Freedom’ which was successfully produced in both Antwerp and Sint-Niklaas.
He is on the staff of the choir federation Koor&Stem as a member of the advice commission and of the board of directors of the East-Flemish section. He is also the conductor of a series of concerts inspired by the music of Flor Peeters for this institution, and is active as a lecturer for choir workshops and the regional conductor’s training course in Oost-Vlaanderen. In addition to this, he is often on the jury for various provincial choir tournaments in both East and West Flanders, and accompanies Davidsfonds Cultural Travelling excursions to the spring festival in Budapest.
Since 1982 the choir has been conducted by Godfried Van de Vyvere, lecturer at the LUCA School of Arts,(- campus Lemmens-), in Leuven and at the Music and Fine Art Academy ‘Podium’ in Sint-Niklaas. He is also the conductor of chamber choir Terpander. From 1998 till 2015 he conducted the Girls’ Choir Gynaika in Sint-Niklaas.
